Immunity Boosting Foods

Having gone through the Covid pandemic, boosting immunity is now something that everyone is thinking about.  As we age, our immune system capability becomes reduced.  This is why it is so important to adopt a healthy lifestyle, so that you can boost your immunity as you age.  The first line of defense against compromised immunity should be your diet. Fortunately, there are many healthy foods that can give your immunity a boost.  Here are a few.

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish is loaded with Omega 3s, which are anti-inflammatory. Examples of fatty fish include salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, trout, and albacore tuna.

Spinach

Spinach is a great source of Vitamin A, which is an infection fighter. It is also a great source of folate, which helps to boost the immune system.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits are loaded with Vitamin C which promotes immune cell functions.

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers contain three times more Vitamin C than an orange. They are also rich in beta-carotene, another antioxidant which not only boosts the immune system, but supports eye and skin health. If you’re not cooking with bell peppers, pick some up today.

Broccoli

Broccoli is an incredible superfood, rich in so many nutrients that support our immune system.  It is rich in Vitamins A, C, and E and potassium.  It also aids in the production of glutathione, which is an antioxidant that mops up free radical damage in the body.

Garlic

When it comes to immune support, garlic is king.  Garlic contains a compound called allicin, which supports the response of white blood cells that fight viruses.

Turmeric

This amazing spice has been around for centuries and has always been prized for its medicinal properties. Turmeric contains curcumin, which fights inflammation and free radical damage.  It is also anti-viral, helping to give your immune system a boost.  Turmeric should be a staple in your spice rack.

Almonds

Looking for a healthy snack? Look no further than glorious almonds. Almonds contain Vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant that the immune system needs to function properly.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumkin Seeds are a great source of zinc, which is needed in order for immune cells to function properly.

Green Tea

While not a food, green tea is worth mentioning. Green tea contains an amino acid called L-theanine. L- theanine stimulates the production of a white blood cell that is the body’s front line defense against germs and tumors.

In addition to diet, make sure that you are exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, avoiding smoking, and minimizing stress.  Boosting immunity starts with a healthy lifestyle.
